SQL Schoolhouse!

Today’s installment of the Saturday SQL Schoolhouse is brought to you by our fine friends across the pond, SQL Bits.  One day I would like to attend this conference as I hear that it is quite an event!  With the conference aside, this is an excellent SQL Server educational resource as there are all the previous presentations from the past years’ conferences and many of them contain video presentations!  Take advantage of this excellent educational opportunity!

SQL Saturday #110 – Tampa

We interrupt this episode on Sunday Funday to remind everyone that next Saturday, March 10th, is SQL Saturday #110 in Tampa.  Over the last year, I have become a passionate proponent of attending SQL Saturdays working diligently to attend ones that are close to me.  How can you pass up free training?

If you have not signed up to attend this SQL Saturday, then what are waiting for?  Check out the schedule of sessions, as we have some pretty top-notch speakers.  My biggest problem is that there are too many good sessions and inevitably, I miss a great one.  That is a good problem to have!  If you want to help out with this SQL Saturday, be sure to fill out the volunteer section of your registration.  If you see me at SQL Saturday, feel free to say howdy!

Enjoy!

In our first installment of the Saturday SQL Schoolhouse for March, I wanted to share a website that has numerous videos, blog posts and other resources that can teach you some nifty things with SQL Server.  The site is run by a husband and wife team, Sean and Jen McCown, called MidnightDBA, check it out.

Also, if you are around late friday evenings they also host a live web show called DBAs@Midnight, where numerous DBAs congregate to chat and interject on topics discussed by Sean and Jen, myself included.

Oh I almost forgot, their newest project is called DBA Roadmap, which is very exciting for the SQL Community.  In this project they will outline how to become a good DBA with great career and learning resources.

Saturday SQL Schoolhouse

In our first installment of the Saturday SQL Schoolhouse for February, I wanted to share a blog post from SQL guru Paul Randal (blog : twitter) regarding shrinking your data files.  Since this day is reserved for learning on this blog, I hope that every DBA will learn this fundamental lesson:  DO NOT SHRINK YOUR DATA FILES!  Read the following and talk amongst yourselves:  In Recovery… | Why you should not shrink your data files.

Make the Time!

Learning SQL Server can be a full-time job.  I hear from people in the IT community all the time that say they would love to learn SQL Server or some other cool technology….wait a minute, there is no other cool technology so strike that last comment.  The response I give to them is simple:  MAKE THE TIME!

If you want to remain gainfully employed it is necessary to take a proactive approach to continuing education.  You cannot avoid doing this on your own, unless your employer sends you to several training classes every year.  I love going to training classes!  There I said it, I love training!  On a routine basis, I beg my employer to send me to training and not just because I enjoy travel and hotel living.  I love training classes!  MAKE THE TIME!

In order to become a better DBA or programmer, you are going to need to spend time outside of work learning about SQL Server either through SQL Saturday, Code Camps, blogging or tweeting!  MAKE THE TIME!

Enjoy!

Saturday SQL Schoolhouse

In our fourth installment of the Saturday SQL Schoolhouse, I wanted to share with you a neat little beginner’s resource for learning SQL Server 2008.

The site is called Quackit.com.  It is a simple website that is aimed primarily for beginners.  Enjoy!
